My Pre-Shampoo Routine for Frizzy Curly Hair

Edit page

I have frizzy hair, and it makes my curls look more chaotic than I’d like. After a couple of hours of research, here’s the pre-shampoo routine I landed on.

  1. Apply jojoba oil to the scalp.
Part hair in sections and apply a few drops of jojoba oil. Massage in for 2-3 minutes. Here I should focus on stimulation rather than using massive amount of oil.

Purpose: Regulate sebum production / Breaks down buildup

  2. Dampen the hair strands
Lightly mist the mid-length to ends of the hair. Damp but not wet.

  3. Apply Mango butter to the lengths.
Take the melted mango butter and work it into the mid-lengths down to the ends. Keep the butter away from the scalp.

Purpose: Mango butter doesn’t add hydration to dry hair, but it can seal and lock the water inside the hair so it doesn’t evaporate.

  4. Wait for 20 to 30 mins before shampoo.

Different butter comparison

ButterWeight / TextureBest Used For…Risk Factor
Mango ButterMedium-Light / SmoothFine to medium hair; easy rinsing and everyday softness.Minimal buildup.
Shea ButterHeavy / CreamyCoarse, curly, or high-porosity hair needing deep moisture.Heavy buildup if overused.
Cocoa ButterVery Heavy / BrittleExtremely damaged, coarse, or brittle hair; split end protection.Hard to wash out; can make hair stiff if rinsed poorly.
